In this guide, you’ll learn how to create categories on your Giftpro store to organise your vouchers and products and elevate your customers’ shopping experience.

Before you begin, it's a good idea to prepare the image to be added to your gift voucher. This image needs to be horizontal, measure 1620 pixels by 900 pixels, and have a maximum file size of 15 Mb.

1. From the Dashboard, click Gifts on the left-hand menu:

2. Then you need to click Categories:

Creating a Category

3. On this page, you’ll see All Vouchers. This is a default category created to hold all existing vouchers. To create a new category, click the green button in the top right-hand corner:

4. On this page, you need to populate the fields provided with all of the details of this new category, beginning with the name:

5. The name of the category is what your customers will click when viewing the front end of your Giftpro store:

6. Below this, you can select the Status and Visibility of your new category:

Status

  • Draft - The category will be created but not visible until published.

  • Live - The category will be visible on your Giftpro store.

  • Scheduled - The category will be published on your Giftpro store at a given time and date.

Visibility

  • Public - This will make the Category visible on your Giftpro store.

  • Direct Link - You will use this option if you need to send a link to the category to a single customer, an exclusive guest list, or add it to a newsletter. Direct Link categories are not visible to everyone or displayed on your Giftpro store.

7. Below those settings, you will need to upload a Header Image for your Category by clicking Upload:

8. When you have you have uploaded your image, you’ll see a preview of it:

It’s a good idea not to use an image with any text, as this image will be minimised or maximised according to the browser your customer uses, such as a mobile phone, tablet, or laptop. Also, if you need a generic image for your gift voucher, websites such as Pixabay.com and Unsplash.com are good places to source royalty-free images.

9. Scroll further down, and you’ll see fields for Title and Description:

10. Title - This can be the same as the Category Name, but you can also add a slightly longer title in this field that incorporates more keywords specific to your Category. This will be visible at the top of your new category page:

11. Description - This needs to be 50-100 words and describe the products within this category. This will be visible at the top of your new category page beneath the title:

SEO

12. The last element on this page is where you can configure the SEO for your gift voucher:

13. Permalink - The permalink is the URL extension that appears in the browser. The link sends people directly to the specific category page, e.g., ‘yourdomainname.giftpro.co.uk/category/gifts/ ’.

Meta Title - In search engine results, this is the title of the page that would be displayed as blue text:

14. This ideally needs to display your shop name, location (if applicable), and category name:

15. Meta Description - In search engine results, this is the grey text that resides under the blue Meta Title and usually consists of a summary detailing the information to be found on that page:

16. The quickest way to populate this area is to choose a sentence from your Description field further up the page:

17. Now you have populated this page with all of the information required for your new category, you need to click the green Save Changes button in the top right-hand corner:

Populating your Category

1. After creating your category, you’ll need to add some products to it so it is visible on your Giftpro store. To do this, click Gifts on the left-hand side menu:

2. You then need to decide whether you are adding physical gifts or vouchers to your new category and click either All Vouchers or All Products:

3. You then need to click the name of the item you would like added to your category:

4. Scroll down the item details page, and you’ll now see a Categories element. Tick the box to add this item to your Category and then click Save Changes in the top right-hand corner:

5. Repeat this process until you have populated your new category with items.

If this is the first category you’ve created on your Giftpro store, it’s a good idea to check your default All Vouchers category to ensure that it, too, has been populated with a header image, description and SEO information so your categories are of the same uniform standard.

What your customers will see

If you have set your new category to be live to all customers on the front end of your Giftpro store, your customers need to select the category from the drop-down menu:

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I delete a category?

By following the instructions in this guide

How many products should I have in a category?

A good rule of thumb is to have at least three items. Ideally, your category should have one full row of items so that you don’t create any 'negative white space' that can make it appear empty.

Can I add vouchers and products to the same category?

Yes - this is ideal for themed promotions, especially if you set your category visibility as Direct Link and limit it targeted groups of customers.
